Google Program TAG To Block Invalid Data-Center Traffic

Google TAG Program

TAG – The Trustworthy Accountability Group, an industry association that fight against criminal activities in digital advertising, has launched a program to block illegal and non-human ad traffic generating from data centers.

With this pilot program TAG will use the Google’s database of data center IP addresses and then increase it based on bigger industry intelligence. Google’s shared blacklist can support to recognize bots, which are being run in data centers however generally, avoid detection by the ABC/IAB International Spiders & Bots List. These bots are tough to detect because they cover up as human visitors by utilizing User-Agent strings, which are vogue from those of common Web browsers.

In the month of May, Google’s blacklist strained 8.9% of all clicks on DoubleClick Campaign Manager alone. Without straining these fake clicks, click-through rates would have been overrated, leading to a major financial damage for advertisers.

Google ad traffic quality product manager, Vegard Johnsen wrote in a blog post “by contributing to our data-center blacklist to the TAG, we expect to help others in the industry protect themselves.

Yahoo, Rubicon project, Quantcast and Facebook are some of the leading companies, which take part in TAG’s new program. Dr.Neal Richter, chief technology officer for Rubicon Project says, “We are dedicated to work on cooperative technology with other industry leaders who share our conviction that a well-lit, clean and high-quality advertising marketplace is in the best interest of not just advertisers, however consumers and publishers also.

This new program is complementary to the TAG’s Fraud Threat List, which was introduced in May. Soon, The TAG Anti-Fraud Working Group will launch a set of principles for public comments, which will be integrated in the final program. By the end of 2015 the ad-fraud tool will be accessible.

Google Buy Button And Many More Upcoming Mobile Enhancements

Google-Buy-Button

Since a long time, talks were going on about the Google buy button and finally it has been introduced by the search giant Google at its Retail Leadership Summit in New York.  The Google Buy Button will allow consumers to make buy directly from Google, which will contain the retailer-branded pages, things such as marketing, fulfillment, returns and these pages will be managed by the individual merchants. This new addition will be available from next month. With a buy button feature, Google desires to make life easier for mobile shoppers.

President of product management for Google Shopping, Jon Alferness says, I just forget wherever I am, when I am shopping on my mobile phone; it becomes ubiquitous against the real outside life.

Moreover, he adds that over the last year, there has been a 115% rise in shopping searches. To stay in touch with the growing mobile world, Google will be releasing other features in the coming future, such as –

The usage of Mobile Voice Search has been doubled as compared to last year. Searchers looking for a particular product will see Google Now Cards along with product reviews or attributes gathered from all around the internet. Google Now Price Drop Cards aware users about the significant fluctuation of prices!

The location has become an essential part of people’s online shopping, specifically with mobile; Google Now In-Store Cards will give information about particular locations, with listed inventory feeds incorporated into the search. In case you are located near a Home Depot and pull up Google Now, the In-Store Card will display you the information of that exact store location: closing hours, loyalty programs, and sales. Alferness adds that this feature is Google hosted but locally branded.

Currently Google is working with retailers – early testers like Flipkart and eBay – to deep link to their apps in shopping ads, pulling consumers to their apps in spite of their websites.

Head of Global mobile sales and strategy at Google, Jason Spero said, 93% of shopping takes place offline, still mobile plays an important role. Last year, Deloitte expected that mobile devices influenced 28% or $1 trillion worth of in-store purchases. For instance, Local Inventory Ads encouraged Sears’ in-store visits by 122%, while 1/3 of search ad clicks impacted in a visit to Target during vacation time last year.

He adds that, shopping doesn’t start when you enter in the store; however the experience of shopping at Target starts early on a mobile device when you actually start searching for the store.

The New Quality Algorithms – Panda And Penguin

Google-Panda-Penguin

You might find it hard to believe but Penguin & Panda are not penalties, rather they are algorithms. Google is very adamant that we should not call these algorithmic changes as penalties. Penguin or Panda are something that is either on or off. It is something where we find the signals that we have and we endeavor to find the correct way to adjust for that.

What Is A Google Penalty?

It’s true that Google penalties do exist. Google can actually penalize a website for things like outbound unnatural links, inbound unnatural links, pure spam, thin content and more. The most common reason for a website to be manually penalized is because somebody has reported the website to Google. Majority of people also believe that Google manually analyzes the top websites in various competitive search results also; however we are not sure about it.

In case your website has a manual penalty, you will get to see this in your Google Search Console, earlier called as ‘Webmaster Tools’. To check if your website has a manual penalty, go to Search Traffic – Manual Actions. You might see a penalty like this –

11

And, if you haven’t received penalty, you will see this –

12

Note – You will not always get to see the proof of penalty in the ‘messages’ section of Google Search Console. It will happen, only you were added to Google Search Console for this website before the website was penalized, then you must see a message, which appears like this –

What is an Algorithmic Filter?

Google’s algorithm is truly a complex topic to discuss. There are various parts of the algorithms, which are continually evaluating websites and changing their ranking depending on what they are seeing. For example, Google’s keyword stuffing algorithm re-evaluates your website every time, whenever Google crawls it. There are several more parts of the algorithm, which are called as filters. Filters are alterations, which happen only when Google decides to apply them. Panda and Penguin are filters. If you website is evaluated as a low quality website then Google will change the algorithms to take down your website ranking. If your website is loaded with a lot of issues then it can be affected rigorously. If it has very few issues then you may experience a least deduction.

Shall we call Penguin & Panda Penalties?

Go to Google search for ‘Penguin Penalty’ or ‘Panda Penalty’ and you will get to see some brilliant, renowned SEO professionals using this terminology. However, if you are someone who really knows Google’s algorithms, it is probably best to refer Penguin and Panda as algorithmic filters and not penalties.

Google Enhances New Mobile Search By Adding Vine, Pinterest And More To Carousel

Google New Mobile Search Adds Pinterest, Vine

Google introduced an addition to its mobile search results, which will offer a quick access to people to their favorite websites.

The announcement is as follows –

Whether you are seeking for Pinterest pins, Houzz idea books, Vines or Food Network recipes, now you can browse through more content from your preferred websites within Google search results on your mobile device.”

This content will be stored in a carousel that you can go through and tap on to the view option to see whichever links you find interesting.

You will agree or disagree, but this ends up being an advantage to searchers remain to be seen.  This is similar to Google’s answer cards, which give searchers the information they are searching without clicking through the other websites.

Now, in spite of searchers clicking through the results in the organic listings, they might give preference to clicking the results in the new mobile carousel. As of now, Google has not given any indication about how it will decide on which content goes in the carousel. Is there any algorithm set up in a place that is similar to organic search results? Or will Google hand select the content from limited sources?

Google To Include ‘Buy Button’ To Search Results In Coming Weeks

Google Buy Button

In a recent time, Google is going to add a ‘buy’ button, which will allow people to buy specific products directly from its search results pages. A report released in the Wall Street Journal stated that initially Google’s buy button will be placed in mobile search, and will be located alongside paid search ads and not in organic search listings.

WSJ’s unidentified sources have clarified how the buy button will perform. When you will click on the buy button, you will be directed to a different Google page to fill out the ordinary purchase. Then you fill in your payment information directly to Google, where the purchase order will be transferred to the retailer to be satisfied.

This news points out another evidence of Google planning to be your one-stop solution for everything to get web pages, to buying products, to ordering takeout.

As Google is growing into the online retail space, it is going to become a major threat for current industry leaders such as eBay and Amazon. Even small scale retailers aren’t happy with this move. Some of the retailers are sharing their concerns privately that it will damage their brand identity and business revenue as the majority of customers will place orders through Google page rather than the retailer’s site.

With the help of this program, retailers will still hold the chance to approach customers to opt-in to their brand marketing campaigns, also gather customer information. Google will preserve all customer payment information before carry forwarding the sale to the retailer.

In spite of having a share of the retailer’s sales price, just like eBay and Amazon, Google will continue to be waged by retailers through its current advertising model. As of now, Google has not commented anything on its buy button, so the news is still unofficial and yet to be confirmed.

Websites like WikiHow, eHow, and Answers.com are some more sites, who have experienced noticeable drops in over the past 2 weeks.  The New Jersey based G-squared Interactive, Glenn Gabe is the one behind the idea of “Phantom” update due to that the update rolled out without any prior information and therefore, Google is yet to accept its existence.

After studying the data, Gabe had decided that this update won’t be relevant to the Penguin or Panda. However, similar kinds of “thin” content targeted by Panda will also being focused by this update. Gabe states that clickbait articles, portal with an ample supplementary information, pages with lots of videos and pages hard to surf have all lost visibility in the past few weeks.

This update seems to be “cruel” in its approach – no problem in punishing all the domains for some cases of thin content.

As of now, Google has not made an official comment on this update, even though Gary Illyes, a member of Google’s Webmaster Trends team at SMX Sydney mentioned there will be a change in the core algorithm update.

There are many other ways through which Webmasters can use the Search Analytics report to make the appropriate decisions and improve website performance.
